Gingerbread Houses: No Sight Needed

As the holiday season approaches, many families are gearing up for special activities in the coming months. In our family, one of the most anticipated traditions is opening our advent calendar, as I mentioned in a previous post. One of the activities we complete from the advent calendar is building gingerbread houses. Both boys love doing this activity and it is quick and fun.

The great thing about gingerbread houses is that they’re messy, hands-on, and engaging for all the senses. You can smell it, feel it, and taste it. This makes it a perfect activity for Titus, who is blind.

To make the process easier, here are a few tips:

  • Buy a gingerbread house kit from the store.
  • Build the house beforehand and let the frosting dry before decorating. I have also heard of people using hot glue to build the house as long as you are not eating it.
  • Place all the different candies in individual small bowls for easy access.
  • Take the time to show and describe each type of candy.
  • Use a plate or tray with a lip to catch any droppings.

Building gingerbread houses is a fun and simple activity that the whole family can enjoy together. It’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit and create lasting memories.
