How to Experience Christmas Lights with a Blind Child

Growing up, my family always had a tradition of looking at Christmas lights. So, when I became a mother to two boys, I knew I wanted to continue this tradition. Fast forward to today, and I am now the proud mother of two boys, one of whom is blind with no light perception. How could we still enjoy looking at Christmas lights together, from the comfort of our car and through the glass, while making sure everyone felt included? We searched the internet for ideas, but unfortunately, we came up empty-handed. So, we had to get creative. We needed something to make the experience more exciting than just describing what we were seeing. That’s when my husband came up with some fun and unique ways to enjoy looking at lights, turning it into a game. And let me tell you, everyone had a blast!

Here is what we decided to do to make it interactive. These ideas could adjusted to meet the needs of any family.

  • Eat one M & M from a candy filled candy cane every time we see a lighted Christmas tree.
  • Yell out “Santa”  every time we see a Santa display.
  • Say, “Oh, Flashy or Fancy”  for blinking lights
  • Everyone starts with a small gift and we pass to the left each time we see a blow-up display, you open the gift you get at the end of the night.

Get creative with your ideas and adapt to make them work for your family. You do not have to see to enjoy a night out looking at lights.
