The long-awaited call finally came – we were approved to become the new parents of two little boys! Excitement washed over me and my hands trembled with joy. I couldn’t wait to share the news with Ryan. Our lives were about to change as we were about to become parents for the first time.
That evening, Ryan and I met with our case worker at the adoption agency to discuss the next steps. Our future children were in a different state, so we planned to start with phone calls, then short weekend visits, and eventually have them transition to our home. However, we were shocked to learn that we were expected to pick them up in just eight days. How could this be possible? We hadn’t prepared their room, found daycare, or even taken time off work. Despite our request for more time being denied, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work with the help of friends.
After eight days, Ryan and I packed up the car and embarked on a journey to get our two little boys in the midst of winter. Following a long drive on icy roads, we finally arrived and settled into a hotel for the night. The next day was filled with paperwork, and then the moment arrived to meet our boys for the first time.
I remember that day vividly – a mix of excitement, happiness, fear, and worry. As we waited in the play area at McDonald’s, a small boy ran up to me, calling me “mommy,” and gave me a big hug. Another little boy, guided by someone, approached us and we shared a hug. Despite the uncertainty, they were happy little boys. We spent the morning eating and playing before saying our goodbyes.
After a short weekend together, we loaded up the car with their belongings and bid farewell to their foster parents. That day, we became a family of four, embarking on a new and exciting journey together.
